A Slim MacBook Named Air, Thin, Nano or Mini?

Seems like the introduction of an ultra-portable notebook at tomorrow’s Macworld keynote address is a foregone conclusion, now that everyone’s predicting it will be the centerpiece of Steve Job’s speech. So now it’s on to picking a name for it and Philip Elmer-DeWitt of Fortune-CNN blogs thinks it may be called Air, Thin, Nano, or Mini. He also says a 32GB iPhone may be revealed plus movie rentals from Fox, Disney, Paramount, Lions Gate and Warner Bro. No matter what the outcome, I’ll be covering the latest from Macworld keynote address right here tomorrow starting at 12:00 PM EST.

Macworld ‘08 Banners Read: ‘There’s something in the air’, But What?

Several ambiguous Apple banners have been erected around San Francisco’s Moscone Center, the venue for MacWorld 2008 which will start on Jan. 14th. The banners which read ‘There’s something in the air’ could be a reference to inclusion of WiMax Mobile standard in future Apple notebooks, says Valleywag. Apple may be about to announce its support for Intel’s WiMax Mobile chipset along with Lenovo and Toshiba which have already declared their support. Or perhaps the banners are just a reference to wireless media transfer between your Mac and iPhone.

BusinessWeek Details “MacBook Mini”

It seems like everyone’s jumping on the ultra-thin Mac notebook bandwagon these days. BusinessWeek’s Arik Hesseldahl reports that when guessing about upcoming Apple products, “it’s particularly helpful to look at the roadmap of Intel”. Hesseldahl goes on to say, Intel “may help lead Apple into uncharted, possibly lucrative, territory starting in late 2008″. He calls the new Apple product MacBook Mini, “with a screen of less than 10 inches and weighing no more than 2 pounds” featuring Intel’s newest chip named Silverthorne. The new notebook will come “without a traditional hard drive, relying instead on at least 32 gigabytes of flash memory for storage” and no multi-touch screen for now to keep the price down.

I think an ultra-thin Mac notebook makes more sense if Apple included an optional docking station with more storage and the flexibility to upgrade its hardware, similar to the docking station patent that I reported on yesterday.

CNBC reports on Apple Ultra Portable Laptop

Jim Goldman reports for CNBC from his source “with good connections to Apple’s Asian manufacturing partners” that Apple will make the much hyped ultra portable laptop announcement at Macworld San Francisco 2008. According to Goldman, the laptop has a 12-inch screen with a profile 50% thinner than current generation MacBook Pro and priced under $1500. If true, this new laptop will be positioned between the MacBook and MacBook Pro models in terms of  retail price and not an entry level model as previously thought.

TheStreet.com’s Gary Krakow and Scott Moritz also say Apple is preparing a Mac Tablet.
